1. If you indicated four years of increasingly responsible professional experience related to early education-based programming or to project management, please describe your experience. Specify the name of the organization(s), your job title(s), and your starting and ending dates.

My current assignment as Literacy Program Specialist: Early Education Services for the San Jose Public Library began in July 2012. In this role I direct an array of library programs focused on encouraging ongoing and lifelong learning for all members of our community. I worked with the Santa Clara County Office of Education s Inclusion Collaborative to design Idea Sheets that are used by parents and caregivers to assist in giving direction and encouragement toward supporting the involvement by children of many age levels in engaging in meaningful yet fun-filled activities.

Earlier, also for the San Jose Public Library, I was the Literacy Program Specialist for Early Care and Education Services, an assignment that began in July 2004 and ended in July 2012 with my promotion to Specialist for Early Education Services, a promotion based on my demonstrating my management skills and program direction capabilities during the eight years I served in that assignment.

From 2004-2012 I continually developed proficiencies and strengths in early education-based programming and project management while managing youth and community services, resource referrals and curriculum development for individuals of different ages as well as varying development levels. I designed curricula that included child development and human behavior, and supported the development of quality childcare; I also assisted clients in developing skills in various business development areas particularly regarding establishing childcare delivery ventures. This support work involved over 300 low-income women and assisted them in gaining financial independence and the needed licensure for opening their businesses, which also was of crucial importance for the entire community by making available quality childcare solutions.

Additionally, I continually utilized my subject matter expertise in managing important federal grant programs, monitored the program status, activities, outcomes and evaluations, and assured compliance with budget parameters, quality standards and alignment with program goals.

As the Literacy Program Specialist for Early Education Services for the San Jose Public Library, I have successfully developed and manage the Reading Rockets program, which is designed to improve the literacy skills of children and achieve appropriate grade-level reading capabilities. Following an in-depth analysis of multiple research-based curricula, selected Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics and Sight Words (SIPPS) for use in program.

I worked closely with the publisher, various principals, teachers and parents in initiating a program for 4th grade children who were reading at 2nd grade levels. I managed the training of teacher volunteers and implemented and revised a program model, and we were successful in reporting a 63%, on average, increase in post-test scores.

3.Describe your experience(s) relating to leading and managing in a changing environment. Please include examples of your management style in your description.

I am responsible for leading and implementing Quality Control and change management processes for the Wee Play and Learn Play Spaces pilot program launched at all San Jose Library branches. This program focuses on encouraging learning while utilizing play activities and continually promotes the involvement by all family members in library activities.

An example of my management style would be that I consistently collaborate with personnel from all the city s library branches to collaborate on developing and implementing a wide array of strategies and actions that support a family-friendly atmosphere at all branches.

I also am a contributing and active member of an advisory board, made up of other early learning professionals, who are committed to improving the educational outcomes for children from low-income, immigrant households aged newborn through age eight. Our advisory board members conduct community outreach activities, and serve in a liaison role by connecting service providers with needful families; we also continually encourage participation by all family members during family literacy nights.

I have developed strong subject matter expertise when it comes to applying for and managing grants and other funding. I oversee the implementation of a First 5 grant that established the Bridge Library at the Educare Family Resource Center, which focuses on assisting English, Spanish and Vietnamese families that have children aged newborn to five years in becoming familiar with utilizing library services.
