Supervisory Forestry Technician

 

Effectively oversee daily operations at Saguache Ranger Station, delivering daily briefings and ensuring mission-preparedness of crew and all needed equipment and other vital resources; utilize Type 6 engines with GS-6 Assistant and crew of three during summer months, ensuring that seasonal support personnel receive all needed training and direction concerning wildland fire suppression. During Spring 2014 successfully completed RX82 and completed four prescribed fires in district for 600 acres; during winter months hold responsibilities for burning piles based on smoke ventilation capabilities, updating pile burn plans, completing smoke permits and assisting other districts as well as Bureau of Land Management as needed.

 

Skillfully coordinate Saguache District programs; have directed horse corral building project, was responsible for cutting over two miles of trees to allow use of hoses for filling tanks as a part of range improvement, built a fishermen s bridge in the back country and removed trees from a five-mile trail.

 

Additional responsibilities involve hiring of seasonal employees; utilize subject matter expertise and experience during selection process, which includes assessing applications, developing insightful interview questions, coordinating interview dates/times and participating in final selection in support of identifying the right person for the job. Spearhead fleet oversight as District Fleet Manager, with duties that include tracking/reporting fleet mileage, assuring accuracy of accounting codes, coordinating maintenance/repairs with vehicle owners and shops, troubleshooting any vehicle problems and serving as point-of-contact for staff regarding any fleet-related issues. Also serve as District Driver Examiner for all vehicles exceeding 26,000 GVW, ATVs, UTVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles and all trailer towing issues. Proficiently ensure currency of all Risk Management Assessments (RMAs) covering District fire/fuel program and conduct RMAs for driving, trailer towing, ATV/UTV, motorcycles, snowmobiles, chainsaw operations and all needed physical training. Also maintain the District fire cache to assure acceptable inventory levels needed to outfit minimum of 20 individuals, a Type 6 engine, 5000+ feet of hose, various appliances, four ATVs, a UTV, a motorcycle, five portable pumps and ten chainsaws.

 

Continually participate in non-suppression activities, including updating the Buffalo Pass burn plan as well as seven prescribed burns within project for over 1000 acres; process included amending NEPE, changing/adding prescribed burn units, collaborating with Timber Administrator to add Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) areas, and interacting with wildlife Biologist to correctly identify/map habitat area of lynx population. Conducted technical review of Baca National Wildlife Refuge east project area, including developing a prescribed fire plan for the Refuge; utilized ArcMap software to develop maps as well as analyze prescribed burns/wildfires.
