Detention Enforcement Officer

         Hold multiple duties and responsibilities in this position: effectively serve as Control Officer, with array of duties including controlling facility access and managing all communication, working closely with public, disseminating information and forwarding incoming telephone calls; also conduct radio/officer security checks and schedule assignments.

         Diligently maintain accountability for radios/vehicles/restraining devices/weapons, ensure detainees meet with various individuals as directed by Deportation Branch, including attorneys, prepare all needed documentation, utilize Detention Accountability Control System (DACS) to verify detainee status, accurately complete log books, perform booking in/out of detainees, and forward all relevant documentation to Processing Department.

         As Processing Officer, prepare needed documentation for arriving/departing aliens including immigration bonds, deportations, voluntary returns, booking cards and property/money receipts; verify existence of all needed documentation, prepare/execute Warrants of Deportation, fingerprint/photograph/strip search individuals for any contraband, maintain surveillance/security for work area and serve in escort role for detainees as needed.

         Additionally serve as Barracks Officer, with multiple responsibilities that include ensuring physical security of facility, appropriate functioning of lighting/plumbing and that there are no escapes/fights/theft or use of dangerous materials, i.e. razors; diligently assure proper identification of individuals, maintain order and prevent damage to government property.

         Expertly perform multiple Patrol Officer duties, including checking barracks/laundry/recreation areas, maintaining security for barracks and assist in any emergency-related support; also secure areas during alarms/emergencies and call in regular Officer Security Checks while continually monitoring area for any hazardous situations, such as fires.

         As Alien Escort, escort individuals between Service/non-Service custodial facilities and to and from airports/hospitals/doctor visits/courts/consulates; also escort large groups of aliens on service busses, often over hundred-mile-plus trips.

         Beginning in November 1996 and continuing currently, was assigned as facilities Recreational Specialist, with multiple responsibilities regarding organization/implementation/supervision of recreational activities for facility detainees; continually ensure that activities comply with Immigration Service Policies and that recreational yard-time adheres to requirements of the American Correctional Association (ACA).

         Effectively plan/coordinate such recurring and periodic activities as basketball/flag football/soccer/baseball/handball; additional responsibilities include facilitating handcrafts and table/card games, and during tenure in assignment established an intermediate team sports tournament schedule for facility detainees.

         Was elected Vice President in September 1996 of facility s Recreation and Welfare Committee, a position still held; responsibilities include developing surfaced ideas into goals/programs that meet multiple objectives, i.e. organizing charity baseball game to raise money for disadvantaged families/individuals; positive activities serve to enhance camaraderie among facility personnel.

         Effectively assure that Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies/programs are enforced and diligently assure objectivity/fairness in determining qualifications/selections/assignments/training of employees; also facilitate compliance with policies regarding workplace Sexual Harassment and communicate support of these programs to personnel.

         Conduct random health/safety inspections of kitchen and food processing facilities as well as dining areas; also inspect dormitory accommodations to assure that all standards and guidelines are met and report any health/safety violations to supervisor.

         Continually interface with public as well as local/state/federal agency personnel, assuring that interactions are courteous, fair, impartial and appropriate, and hold responsibilities to comply with oral/written instructions from Chief Detention Enforcement Officer and Detention Operations Supervisors; also continually utilize Detention Office Manual to gain additional guidance as well as personal expertise and experiential base to make decisions concerning actions during any emergency or unusual situations.
